Fact-check: Clinton says stocks do better with a Democrat in the White House

Published:

FORT MYERS, Fla.- Want to see a stock market boom? Hillary Clinton says put another Democrat in the White House. Clinton made the comment during a campaign stop in New Hampshire, adding “The evidence is pretty clear that under Democratic presidents, going a ways back, people do better.”

WINK News and our team of researchers at PolitiFact looked at evidence going back over a century.

A reprot by international finance firm CMC Markets finds U.S. Stock markets have posted an average annual return of 15.31% under Democratic presidents, compared to just 5.43% under Republicans.

Another study by Adviser Perspectives finds the DOW has gone up an average of 8.7% per year under Democratic presidents, compared to 5.7% under Republicans.

PolitiFact rates Clinton’s statement that “the stock market does better when you have a Democratic president in the White House,” MOSTLY TRUE.

While Clinton is technically correct, PolitiFact calls it mostly true because there are a lot of other factors to consider, including the Federal Reserve which operates independent of any political party and has a huge role in the economy.

Bottom line, experts say don’t credit or discredit a president so much for how the stock market performs under their watch.
