MGN BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) – Colombia’s chief prosecutor says his office has documented more than 150 forced abortions carried out by the country’s main rebel force. And he says the number could rise. Eduardo Montealegre says evidence indicates that “forced abortion was a policy of the FARC,” referring to the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia. He says it was usually forced on female guerrillas so they would not be lost as combatants. The comment to reporters late Thursday comes as the government is nearing the conclusion of talks with the FARC aimed at ending a half century of guerrilla conflict. A key element of the proposed deal is how rebel and government forces will be punished for human rights violations and other crimes.
