FORT MYERS, Fla.- Fighting crime and fighting hunger are two passions of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Once again, the sheriff’s office has partnered with WINK News and the Harry Chapin Food Bank to collect funds to feed families in need in Southwest Florida through the WINK News Feeds Families Hunger Walk. “First and foremost, it’s not taxpayer money,” said Lt. Jeff Dektas with LCSO. In fact, drug deals, robberies, fraud, and other crimes are helping feed local families. The sheriff’s office is actually donating forfeiture money, money taken from criminals. “Money that we have seized from bad guys, and we take that money and we do good with it,” said Dektas. This year, the Hunger Walk hopes to raise $330,000. Harry Chapin can turn every $1 donated into $6 worth of food, meaning if the goal is reached, nearly $2 million worth of food will be collected for families in need. “We put that money back into the community and we’re able to actually do some good with it in the community and help a lot of people in doing so,” said Dektas. Over the past three years, the sheriff’s office has pledged $40,000 to the walk. The big event takes place Saturday, January 16 at Miromar Outlets in Estero.
