$90K left to raise for Hunger Walk just around the corner

FORT MYERS, Fla.- Southwest Florida residents are joining the fight against hunger with just two days left before the annual WINK News Feeds Families Hunger Walk.

As of Thursday evening, we are about $93,000 short of our $330,000 goal. Several teams make it their mission every year to raise money for the Harry Chapin Food Bank.

“It’s amazing how many hungry people there are in this community,” said Richard Schweers with the Firefightin’ Irish.

“I think it’s great to give back to the community, we have so much and to help other people, I think that’s a really good cause,” said Harriet McHenry, vice president of the Gulf Coast Vikings Lodge.

Whether it’s dressing up as a Norwegian viking, or throwing on a firefighter coat, the Gulf Coast Kikings and the Firefightin’ Irish are just some of the teams who are a part of the movement to help feed families in need.

“It’s just so much fun to be able to do good and we make it a challenge,” said Schweers. “We’re over $2,000 right now.”

Toby Ives, interim CEO of the Harry Chapin Food Bank hopes residents will continue donating to the cause. Those raising money for the cause say Southwest Floridians are stepping up to the challenge.

“I got three more checks today another $150, they just keep on coming in,” said Schweers.

For every $1 collected, the Harry Chapin Food Bank can get $6 worth of food for families.

The WINK News Feeds Families Hunger Walk takes place Saturday at Miromar Outlets in Estero. To register to walk, or to donate, click here.
