MIAMI (AP) – A 6-year-old boy suffered a broken leg and some bruises after a Miami police officer ran him over with his patrol car.

Miami Police Maj. Delrish Moss tells news outlets that the unidentified officer struck the boy Wednesday afternoon in Miami when the child tried to cross the street on a scooter.

Moss says the officer didn’t see the boy and it appears the crash was an accident.

He says the boy’s family members threw punches at the officer following the incident, but no one was charged.

The officer called rescue crews and the boy was transported to a hospital. Miami Fire Rescue Capt. Ignatius Carroll said Wednesday evening that the boy is in stable condition.

Moss says Miami’s traffic homicide unit is investigating the incident.
