TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – New Florida laws will crack down on the use of credit card skimmers on gas pumps and raise the threshold before police can seize property from suspected criminals.

Gov. Rick Scott signed 14 bills into law Friday, including a measure that will require an arrest before police can seize property.

The law that takes effect July 1 is an effort to prevent abuse of current law that allows property seizures on the mere suspicion that a crime has occurred.

And a law that takes effect Oct. 1 will require security devices on gas pumps to prevent illegal credit card skimmers. The legislation was a top priority for Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, whose department has been investigating the use of skimmers to steal credit card information.
