TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) – A grand jury has indicted two men on first-degree murder charges in the July 2014 shooting of a Florida State University law professor.

The Tallahassee Democrat reports that Leon County jurors began deliberating Thursday and returned with formal charges Friday against Sigfredo Garcia and Luis Rivera. They are accused of killing of Daniel Markel.

Garcia was picked up last month in South Florida by the FBI and Tallahassee police. He remains in the Leon County Jail without bond. Rivera is currently in a federal prison for an unrelated crime.

Court records released earlier this month show that Markel’s shooting was part of a murder-for-hire scheme that may have been set in motion by a bitter divorce between Markel and his ex-wife, fellow attorney Wendi Adelson.
