Lee County school district unveils new sidewalk proposal

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Students in the surrounding neighborhood of Island Coast High School may be getting their wish granted for a safer trek to school.

“My freshman year when I would walk to school we constantly heard about people getting hit walking to school,” said Island Coast student Cassidi Rodgers.

The Lee County School District plans to submit three applications to the Federal Department of Transportation to receive funding for sidewalks around Harns Marsh elementary and middle schools, Edison Park Elementary School and Island Coast High School.

The sidewalks would cost almost $2.2 million, a price parents like Beverlyn Rolon agree is money well spent.

“Yeah I think its very worth it, especially for the kids in this area, the ones that walk to and from school,” she said.

Children have been seen walking both in the grass and in the road, something students like Rodgers feel is the only option.

“Around the Gator Circle community area, there’s not a lot of sidewalks, so you’re always walking in the road if you wanted to walk around,” she said.

Applications are due Dec. 30 and will need special approval from a special Lee County planning board set to meet Friday.

The project would be funded and managed by FDOT. If approved, the county and local municipalities would be responsible for maintenance.
