Families in Southwest Florida are preparing their homes to get ready for whatever Eta brings at the beginning of next week.

A man we spoke to knows the strength of Mother Nature from past experience. A tornado damaged his Cape Coral neighborhood last year. His biggest worry are the strong winds associated with Eta.

Jack Stevenson could not plan for the EF-1 tornado that damaged his home and his neighborhood last October.

“That tornado, there was no preparing,” Stevenson said. “You know it was two minutes, and so this time, I’m going to try to get a little bit ready for it.”

Stevenson hopes possible winds from the storm won’t bring the same damage the tornado did.

“I am concerned a little bit about our roof and pool cages,” Stevenson said. “I’m going to move a lot of our stuff on our patio.”

Nancy Pedone says she just finished repairing her roof from the tornado a month ago, so she’s hoping the storm doesn’t mess it up.

“I hope that the storm is kind to us and that we don’t have an awful lot of damage from it,” Pedone said.

But she says she will still prepare for the worst while hoping for the best.

“We buy extra water, and we change out the canned goods that we have put away for emergencies, so we usually have supplies on hand, and everybody should probably do that,” Pedone said. “I hope it spares everyone.”

Stevenson is experienced with natural disasters, but he does not want to see anything close to a repeat of the tornado.

There are some neighbors who are still repairing their roofs from the tornado in 2019. We spotted one home that has tarps on the roof, so neighbors are crossing their fingers that the winds don’t impact them.

“I hope never to go through it again,” Stevenson said.
