A man was killed recently within a gated community in Collier County. Deputies say he fired into a home with children inside, and he ended up dead.

Collier County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after the man was accused of shooting into a family’s home within the Raffia Preserve neighborhood over the weekend.

The sheriff’s office says the man is a victim because the investigation is still in its early stages, and detectives working the case are not ready to officially call the man found dead the accused shooter.

People who live in and around the community don’t mind saying what happened there got their attention for all the wrong reasons.

Danielle Salituro and her family moved to Collier County less than a year ago.

“It’s just absolutely gorgeous,” Salituro said.

But she said she’s shaken up after hearing about the attempted home invasion at Raffia Preserve, just minutes from her new home.

“Shocking to hear that it happened so close to here,” Salituro said. “Felt pretty safe moving down here. It seems like a really nice area and a really nice community, so it was kind of shocking to hear that that would actually take place so close.”

Early Saturday morning, Collier County deputies say a young man shot through someone’s door. The homeowner then went outside with his own weapon and killed him.

The initial report says the dead man was wearing a blue Walmart vest with shotgun shells in his pockets.

Rich Kolko, WINK News Safety & Security specialist, said the evidence at this time suggests to him that this was not going to end well.

“This was at four o’clock in the morning,” Kolko said. “The likelihood of somebody being there was very high, and the likelihood he wanted to either threaten or possibly hurt somebody also very high going into a situation armed as heavily as he was.”

David Thomas, Ph.D., a former law enforcement officer and forensics expert at Florida Gulf Coast University, is predicting the homeowner who fired back will not face charges, pointing to Florida’s “stand your ground” law.

“The way the statute reads, it reads that I have to be in fear for my life,” Thomas said. “It doesn’t give you a whole lot of, you know, there’s not a lot of parameters. It’s very simple.”

Deputies are not ready to say why they think the man killed targeted the family involved.

Collier County Sheriff’s Office would not answer any more questions Monday, saying the investigation is ongoing.
