A big reveal for a special birthday girl. WINK News first introduced you to Emilie last month after her family lost everything in a flood. Afterward, her mom had one request for Emilie’s 17th birthday, lots of cards.

WINK News hand-delivered hundreds of birthday cards to Emilie’s house on Thursday after viewers like you, and people all over the country, sent in birthday cards.

It was a team effort to carry in the birthday cards. Cards Emilie didn’t know were coming, and a blindfold only added to the mystery.

You could hear the joy in Emilie’s voice see it in her smile when she saw the piles of cards.

“This is the kind of birthday growing up that I always wanted her to have, cards and gifts and friends. Friends more than anything and to her this is friends. I don’t even know what to say,” said Emilie’s mother Shaylin Orta.

When WINK News first met mom Shaylin and her daughter Emilie they were cleaning up after a septic tank pipe backed up inside their Lehigh Acres home.

That really upset Emilie who is autistic. Her dad Rick Orta said his girl lives a tough life. “Sometimes she gets to a point where she just breaks and it’s not easy. So a lot of families who have autistic kids we definitely know what it’s like and it’s not easy.”

“She’s never had birthday parties; she had no friends to come to her birthday parties,” said Emilie’s mom.

For her 17th birthday at least, she had countless friends. There were cards from people here in Southwest Florida, and ones from across the country and even around the world.

Every one of them was sent to make Emilie’s birthday her best one ever.

What better birthday gift than the gift of love. Shaylin said, “I’m just so grateful, they did what I couldn’t. They gave her a kind of birthday; I couldn’t give her.”

The tough moments will be back, but now Emilie knows she has friends everywhere.

“I just like seeing her happy because her whole entire life it’s not going to be easy. So to see her happy, there’s no words to describe it,” said her father Rick.
