Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno says whether a school threat is real or fake, enough is enough.

The recent school threats have some parents on edge about sending their children to school. So much so that they are pulling their kids out of their classes.

Marceno says that while today’s threats were deemed not credible, de[uties have to figure out where the threats came from and who’s responsible. A spokesperson for the school district told WINK News that a violent threat on social media against Oak Hammock Middle School made its way to Cypress Lake High School.

Below is an email that went to the parents of high school students, making them aware of a possible threat. Middle school parents received a letter as well letting them know of the threat against their students’ school.

Good evening Panther family, I apologize for the late hour, but felt it was important to get this information to you as soon as possible. There is a rumor circulating about a threat of violence against our school tomorrow. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating and will provide extra security on campus tomorrow. The safety and security of our students and staff is our highest priority and we will update you if there is any new information.

As a result of these perceived threats, LCSO increased its deputy presence at both schools. Despite this, many parents decide to keep their kids at home, saying it isn’t worth the risk.

Sheriff Marceno says his detectives will continue working on this case until they get to the bottom of what happened here. “As we’re investigating, we are using the real-time crime center describes social media. So, while we’re scrubbing social media, if we can build [a] case and we have a suspect and a crime that’s been committed then, we charge to the fullest extent of the law,” said Sheriff Marceno.

Within the last year, the Youth Services Division of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office has worked almost 150 threats against schools in Lee County. Compare that number to just 50 from the year prior.
