A North Fort Myers man is facing charges for drawing a 3-foot sword against deputies during a traffic stop.

Randy Lynn Austerman, 34, was arrested last week and faces charges of resisting an officer, drug possession, marijuana possession, fraud and impersonation.

According to a Lee County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, Austerman, who is transient, was found in a vehicle on Bayshore Road. Austerman told deputies he wasn’t moving because he ran out of gas.

According to deputies, he was “profusely sweating and was extremely nervous.”

Austerman was ordered out of the vehicle after providing deputies the wrong name, according to the report.

Austerman refused. Deputies attempted to pull him out of the car and that’s when he grabbed a “3 foot steel sword” from the car.

He also pulled out a “metal dragon shaped handle and attached it to the sword,” according to the report. He slammed his door closed and stuck the sword out through the window.

Deputies deployed a taser and were able to secure him in handcuffs that way, according to the report.

Deputies found methamphetamine and marijuana in the car.

Austerman remains in Lee County Jail.
