On Monday morning, Civitas of Cape Coral broke ground on a small housing development designed to help families find affordable homes.

Renting is not easy nowadays; prices are constantly increasing, which is why Civitas is bringing in 96 affordable housing units off Pine Island Road. If you are considering living there, it will be based on your income and the number of people in your household.

One- to three-bedroom units will be available to families who fall between 0% to 80% of the area’s median income. A typical family of four earning $64,000 annually could thus get a two-bedroom place for $1,448 or a three-bedroom for $1,673.

WINK News spoke to Amy Yearsley, the Cape Coral housing coordinator who says the Civitas development is sorely needed with so many people juggling the costs of rent, gas and food.

“When you have predominantly hospitality-based industries and people in the building industry, those wages aren’t growing at the amount that they are for other types of occupations, and it just can’t keep up,” Yearsley said.

“Families will benefit from knowing that they can live in a brand-new apartment complex and not pay over 30% of their gross income,” said Marcus Goodson, executive director of the Lee County Housing Authority.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place at 7:30 a.m.
