Lightning danger as thunderstorms return to SWFL

Many people in Southwest Florida were awoken on Sunday night by lightning so bright it seemed like daylight had come early. A stormier season is coming, making this a good time to be mindful of the danger posed by lightning.

According to research from FloridaDisaster.org, our state sees around 70 to 100 days a year with at least one thunderstorm, making lightning strikes one of the most deadly weather hazards in the Sunshine State.

They can also do damage to homes, too. We know this from last year when three homes in Lee and Charlotte counties were left unlivable all in the same week after being struck by lighting. At least one of the strikes left a gaping hole in the roof.

We still aren’t in the heart of the rainy season yet, but stormy and even extreme weather will only increase from here on out.
