A landmark in the Southwest Florida community for decades officially closed its doors over the weekend.

The Shell Factory in North Fort Myers shut down operations on Sunday after 86 years.

The Nature Park allowed guests to meet birds, reptiles and even a camel.

Two regulars, Machelle and Christine, told WINK News that the news was devastating for them.

“To see that the Shell Factory ended up where they couldn’t survive here is a shame because we won’t be able to pass that onto other generations,” said local resident Christine Graham.

The money from this past weekend’s sales will help the staff pay to feed the animals until they are all rehomed.

There has been no word on what will happen to the 18 acres of land the business occupied.
