A Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office vehicle was seen rolling over on a road in Port Charlotte.

The incident occurred on South McCall Road on Monday at around 4:30 p.m.

According to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy was driving in the median to avoid traffic on their way to an emergency call for service.

The deputy then hit a bump, which caused the vehicle to flip.

McCall Rd. sees its fair share of traffic, “Everybody’s moving at a speed of between 55 and 60 miles an hour,” said driver Brad Holinka. “Typically, that’s the normal traffic for every day.”

But drivers on Monday didn’t expect this literal turn of events. Holinka was behind the wheel when he first saw the traffic.

“I was making my way home, about 3:30 p.m. was the time that I left from work, and I made it up to Gasparilla Road when I noticed that traffic was pretty much at a standstill,” he said.

Then he saw something shocking.

“When I came around the bend and witnessed that a car was flipped upside down,” he explained to WINK News reporter Haley Zarcone. “Traffic again came to a standstill. I took my phone and I zoomed in, and once I took the picture, that’s when I realized that, oh, that’s a deputy sheriff that had flipped over. And I was extremely shocked at that.”

Viewer photos show the trunk wide open with the tires to the sky.

“The hand of God was with that deputy at that point in time to keep them safe,” Holinka said.

While this deputy made the split-second decision to drive onto the median, there are laws in Florida that require drivers to move over for law enforcement vehicles.

No other vehicles were involved.

The deputy was not injured and is reported to be OK.
