The CDC recommends an annual flu vaccine for everyone 6 months and older.  Here to discuss this year’s flu reports and the vaccination is Dr. Annette St. Pierre-MacKoul.

2014-2015 Influenza Season:

Influenza A (H3N2) is prevalent:
Flu is in all states
48% of flu this year is ‘like’ the vaccine components
52% is not ‘like’ the vaccine components

CDC Recommendations:
Get the Flu Vaccine
Some protection – even if strain is different
Less severe case of the flu due to cross-reactivity
Not too late to get the flu vaccine

Approaches to Fighting the Flu:
Get Vaccinated
Preventative actions to help stop the spread of germs
Antiviral medications

Flu Vaccines:
Injection – killed vaccine
Nasal Spray – live vaccine
2 doses the first year separated by a month (6 mo-8 yr)
Recommended for all over 6 months of age

Spread of the Flu:
Contagious disease
October – May
Spread by coughing and sneezing
Spread by close contact

Symptoms of the Flu:
Fever / chills
Sore throat
Muscle aches
Fatigue
Cough
Headache
Runny nose / stuffy nose

Complications of the Flu:
Hospitalization
Pneumonia
Worsening underlying medical conditions
Diarrhea and dehydration
Seizures in children
