LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. – A man’s in the hospital after getting shot while doing yard-work at his Lehigh Acres home, and the shooter’s still on the loose.

It happened just before noon Monday on Gaylord Avenue, three blocks from Homestead Road.

“Crazy world, it’s a crazy world that’s out here,” said Emery Johnson, a neighbor to the victim. Deputies say the homeowners were doing yard work when they noticed a suspicious vehicle.

“The vehicle… circled the block a couple of times, so they decided at that point to they probably should arm themselves,” said Lt. Jeff Dektas with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

When the car came back around, the suspects got out and gunfire erupted between the suspects and the homeowner.  A homeowner in his 60s was shot in the abdomen and arm. He was taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for his injuries.

“That’s scary,” said Peggy Johnson, “because it could have been mine.”

Johnson and her husband Emery moved to Lehigh Acres from Pennsylvania four years ago. They never thought their home would be a stone throw away from a crime scene like this one.

“I don’t understand how people can think the way they do. I don’t understand it,” said Johnson.
