New Lee County high school may be delayed

FORT MYERS, Fla.- A major plan to build a new high school in Lee County could soon be delayed.

WINK News has been telling you, two locations are on the table in Estero and Bonita Springs.

Late Monday night, the superintendent of Lee County schools said there may be another option to look at.

“We want to be good neighbors and people are unsettled about the property, we are unsettled about the property, so we need time,” said superintendent Dr. Nancy Graham.

Dr. Graham recommended to the board delaying the project by a year and adding portable classrooms at Estero High School just for freshman students coming to the new school.

“Students that start at the freshman class of school “lll” would be the freshman class of that school, they would just start in a portable school,” said Dr. Graham.

Right now there are two sites the district owns that are large enough to build a high school–one in Estero near Corkscrew Road and Three Oaks Parkway.

The other possible site is in Bonita Springs off Bonita Grand Drive and Tower Road.

Monday night, Bonita mayor Ben Nelson spoke to the school board to advocate for the school to be in his city. He says city council will help the district find the perfect spot for the new school.

Dr. Graham tells WINK News the district just needs more time to decide.

“We could buy a year if we started with a ninth grade class only, we have done that in three other high schools, it has worked very well,” said Dr. Graham.
