Lee County takes stakes out of high stakes exams

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – The decision to eliminate the test consequences comes after learning schools wouldn’t get the results until December.
The school board’s vote is big news for students in Lee County’s Public Schools.
“It didn’t take a rocket scientist to be able to figure out that this was not a good idea,” says Lori Fayhee, concerned parent of Lee County, “I’m so proud of our board all five of them that they were able to make this decision.”
Students will still take the end of course exams, but the district plans to use the results solely for their own purposes. However, many testing opponents don’t agree with this decision.
“Now that the state has eliminated the end of course requirement the district should have gone and taken the full step and eliminated them as well,” says Bob Shaeffer, testing expert, “not just eliminated consequences.”
As of Wednesday morning, WINK News was told the school board is planning a workshop on testing issues for next month. That will be after students will have taken this year’s end of course exams.
“We had hoped the the whole test would be thrown out,” says Fayhee, “I hope there is still a way to do that. But the parents are very upset that the students still have to take the test.”
