Lee County Commissioners deny rehab center zoning request

FORT MYERS, Fla.- Lee County Commissioners voted against allowing a controversial drug rehab center to move into a mansion on Winkler Road.

Neighbors in the area say they don’t want a rehab center in the middle of their neighborhood and so close to schools, but the developer says he will run the center responsibly with 24 hour security. The center was proposed inside a 14,000 square foot mansion on a 5 acre property on Winkler Road near College Parkway.

The developer said they would provide care for people dealing with substance abuse, alcoholism and other issues. They would not allow anyone with a criminal record or sex offenders.

After numerous meetings and debates, residents are breathing a sigh of relief. On Wednesday, commissioners agreed with neighbors, saying the property is not the right place for a drug rehab center.
