FORT MYERS, Fla.- Two people are dead and one is critically injured after a crash near the intersection of Michigan Avenue at Veronica S. Shoemaker Boulevard.

Fort Myers police say 22-year-old Alyssa Carr, 19-year-old Kenya Ozeata, and 22-year-old Donavan Meeks were traveling in a black Hyundai at the time of the crash. Carr and Ozeata were killed and Meeks was transported to the hospital in critical condition when the car wound up underneath a box truck.

The crash happened around 4:30 a.m. and closed the intersection down for hours Tuesday morning.

Police say the driver of the box truck was not injured.

With Tuesday’s deadly crash, Lee County is on track see more traffic fatalities in 2015 compared to the previous year. According to Florida Highway Patrol, 81 people died in crashes across Lee County in 2014, compared to the current number of 78.

Jay Anderson, executive director of Stay Alive Just Drive, says the numbers show that drivers across southwest Florida are too relaxed on the roadways.

“That’s how you have to drive, as if every other driver is a threat or a risk to you,” said Anderson. “You got to be aware of what’s happening ahead of you, behind you, and to your sides.”

Fort Myers police have not yet released what led to the circumstances of Tuesday’s deadly crash, but Anderson believes most, if not all, similar incidents can be avoided.

“You have to stay alert and stay focused. That’s the most important thing that I can stress to everyone.”
