Man wearing surgical mask tries to rob Publix

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. – Crime Stoppers is looking for a man who tried to rob a grocery store Saturday morning.

Lee County Sheriff’s deputies said the man walked into the Publix at 4065 Hancock Bridge Parkway around 11 a.m. wearing a surgical mask. Employees said he walked up to the customer service counter and asked an employee to cash an $800 money order. The suspect then handed her a piece of paper demanding cash and implied he had a weapon.

At the same time, a store manager came up to the counter. The suspect panicked, saying to the cashier he was “only kidding” and left.

He was last seen wearing a black long-sleeved shirt, shorts, surgical mask and straw hat. Employees said he was seen getting into a white car.

Anyone with information on the identity and whereabouts of the attempted robber is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477).
