Airport contractor trend hits Punta Gorda

Published: Updated:

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – Punta Gorda Airport will introduce private contractors to assist TSA guards beginning June 1, according to the airport authority.

Wait times in security check lines are as long as 90 minutes in some airports due to spring break travel. Officials say they hope the change will provide more flexibility for travelers.

Twenty-two airports, including in San Francisco and Kansas City, already use private firms for security screening. The growing trend will make its way to Punta Gorda International this summer.

But airport officials said they are hiring private contractors to help with administrative duties to free TSA to focus on screening.

The goal is to cut down wait times and move passengers through lines at a faster pace, officials said.
