JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) – A Jacksonville firefighter had a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit when his vehicle struck a stopped truck and killed him.

The Florida Times-Union reports that 43-year-old firefighter Christopher Charles Swary’s SUV hit a stopped utility truck at 11 p.m. on Feb. 2. The legal blood-alcohol limit is 0.08, and Swary’s was 0.224.

Swary was not wearing a seatbelt and did not apply his brakes before hitting the stopped truck from behind. His vehicle caught fire and he died at the scene.

The utility truck driver had stopped his truck in a travel lane so another worker could remove traffic cones on the street.

Neither the driver nor the other worker was injured in the crash, but the driver was ticketed for stopping in a traffic lane.
