WINK at RNC: Stage set, hopes high for Trump’s big acceptance speech

Published: Updated:

CLEVELAND (AP) – Donald Trump had a walk-through at the Cleveland arena where he will accept the Republican Party’s nomination for President Thursday night.

Trump walked on stage at the Quicken Loans Arena and stood at the microphone for several minutes, pointing to various spots in the building.

The Republican presidential nominee briefly spoke, joking that he loved the media before then paying tribute to the host city and the Cleveland police.

But preparations for his big speech were not without continued controversy after Trump suggested to the New York Times that the United States might abandon its NATO military commitments if he were elected president. His statement created clear party division as Republicans reel from Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’ just-short-of-an-endorsement speech Wednesday and even as Republicans call for united support of their nominee.
