Lee Memorial doctor warns against misusing ER

Published: Updated:

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Misuse of the emergency room has become an ongoing issue over the years, especially during this time of year.

Doctor Ian Backstrom, an ER physician at Lee Memorial, complained that many patients come in with symptoms that could’ve been handled at a walk-in clinic.

“They are very capable of taking care of a variety of medical problems,” Backstrom said.

Backstrom also said many people misuse ambulances, believing the myth that arriving in an ambulance means they’ll see a doctor immediately.

However, that’s not the case. The sickest patients are the ones who always get treated first.

If something is truly a medical emergency, go to the ER. If not, make an appointment with a doctor or head to the clinic.
