KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) – A 28-year-old man is charged with shooting an Osceola County deputy who was breaking up a disturbance at a Kissimmee bar.

Deputy John Rios was shot in the leg during the disturbance early Sunday at the Sun on the Beach bar. He was treated and released at a hospital.

The sheriff’s office said Rios tried to detain Angel Manuel Lopez as he was leaving the bar and a struggle ensued. Lopez fired his gun during the incident.

Other deputies detained him without firing their weapons.

Lopez is charged with eight offenses, including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

He is being held at the Osceola County jail. Online jail records do not say if he has a lawyer.
