FORT MYERS, Fla. The National Weather Service in the Tampa Bay Area issued a red flag warning Thursday night in the west and central part of the state, including several counties in Southwest Florida.

The warning takes effect Friday from noon to 8 p.m. Below is a full list of the affected counties:

  • Sumter County
  • Polk County
  • Hardee County
  • Highlands County
  • DeSoto County
  • Manatee County
  • Sarasota County
  • Charlotte County
  • Lee County
  • Levy County
  • Hernando County (Inland)
  • Pasco County (Inland)
  • Hillsborough County

Winds are predicted to reach 15 to 20 mph.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
