Gas siphoned from Collier County special needs van

NAPLES, Fla. Students at Easterseals Academy returned to school Monday after Hurricane Irma only to find out their school van was damaged.

A suspect siphoned gas from the van by puncturing a hole into the tank, according to director Michelle Turchetta.

“It’s a very expensive repair because it’s a specialized van for it’s handicap accessible so they have to put in a specialized type of tank,” Turchetta said. “Just the tank itself cost over a thousand dollars. It’s a huge hit for us.”

The school used the van to take the students on field trips and to different job sites.

“To steal from these kids is just really sad,” Turchetta said.

It will take about a week for the van to be repaired, school officials said.
