Collier County short term rental regulation issues

With the beautiful beaches, and warm air all year around, it’s not mystery why visitors look to the Southwest Florida area for vacations, but some residents aren’t happy about where the vacationers stay.

The Tourist Development Council is looking into the issue of short term rental regulations, and how they can add restrictions to them without pushing people away from visiting the area.

As of now, there is a Florida statute that bans Collier County from adding anymore restrictions on vacation rentals, but they can be more specific on how they define a vacation rental.

For example, the council could suggest the county not allow short term rentals for less than seven or even up to 30 days. Right now, it’s anything less than six months.

The Tourist Council says a lot of the rentals are not zoned properly, and they are just popping up in residential areas, where neighbors are tired of seeing new renters come in to their neighborhood every few days.

The council also suggest owners agree to building and fire codes and they could face penalties if they don’t comply.

The council does say they want to fix these problems to satisfy everybody, but they don’t want to push people away from vacationing in SWFL.
