A novel coronavirus, named Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), was identified as the cause of an outbreak of respiratory illness first detected in Wuhan, China in 2019. The illness caused by this virus has been named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The Florida Department of Health in Charlotte County is asking for community support as reported cases continue to increase. Department administrator Dr. Joseph Pepe held a Facebook Live explaining the county’s case numbers. He says the most important thing to do right now is to flatten the curve so hospitals can be ready for a potential medical surge if the area is hit by a hurricane. He added, we can help flatten the curve by social distancing, avoiding large crowds and wearing a mask in public. Dr. Pepe also said, “The mask piece isn’t perfect but it’s another layer, so if I can minimize my footprint in the community, if more and more people do that, then it really helps.” Pepe said everyone can help flatten the curve while we wait for a vaccine.
