A man stabbed a 63-year-old woman in the face during an attack on Tuesday in the children’s section of a Daytona Beach library, police said.

The woman was taken to the hospital for treatment, the man was arrested and the library was closed for the rest of the week, news outlets reported. Library employees will be offered counseling to help with their emotional needs, said Volusia County spokesman Gary Davidson said.

Deputy police Chief Jakari Young told reporters Burnian Bedford, 55, was charged with aggravated battery and burglary. They believe he is homeless.

The attack occurred around 11:30 a.m. as the woman was working in the children’s area of the library, officials said.

Bedrord is known to hang out near the building, Young said. He walked in and greeted the employee before the attack.

“They exchanged pleasantries and then he walked behind the plexiglass and began an unprovoked attack on her,” Young said. “He had a pair of scissors with which he caused lacerations to her face.”

The woman suffered serious injuries to her face, including an eye injury, police spokesman Messod Bendayan told The Daytona Beach News-Journal.
