Cape Coral police are mourning the loss of a K-9 who was a member of the department for seven years.

K-9 Kevin, a.k.a. Kevlar, died Sunday, a year after being diagnosed with lymphoma, the department said.

Kevin was born Jan. 3, 2008, and joined the CCPD in May 2009. His partner, Officer Aponte, trained the K-9, who became certified in patrol, tracking and narcotics detection.

Kevin won the National Police Canine Association competition in narcotics detection in 2012, and took 2nd in the patrol competition.

The CCPD said Kevin was responsible for hundreds of drug arrests and suspect apprehensions.

“He participated in public K-9 demonstrations and was loved by everyone who saw him,” the agency said in a Facebook post.

Kevin retired in 2016, but continued to participate in demonstrations until 2019 when he was diagnosed with lymphoma.

The CCPD is asking people who have photos of K-9 Kevin to post them on their Facebook page here.
