After some of the Fort Myers City Council members were shocked by the proposed price increase for a new Fort Myers Police headquarters, new figures emerged.

Back in September, WINK News told you that the new headquarters would cost more than $70 million. Now, that price has been slashed to about $59 million.

The architects proposed cutting down on the size of the building. Instead of making changes throughout the entirety of the old News-Press building, they plan to demolish two spaces and utilize a storage building.

The main question many taxpayers have is who will pay for this? There could be a possible tax on new projects, or the City of Fort Myers could charge residents a police impact fee.

Fort Myers Mayor Kevin Anderson still questions about the project. “Well, that’s just a piece of it. I mean, we have to look at the totality of the project. Is that the best location? Is that the best bang for the dollar? And weigh it out before we make that final commitment,” said Anderson.

The next step for the city council is touring the space for themselves. They say that tour will be scheduled after the first of the year.
