Hundreds of kids need angels. The Salvation Army is in search of volunteers for its annual Angel Tree program. There are still 400 tags representing the names of kids who need help having a Christmas.

Santas helpers are hard at work at the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree warehouse.

Linda Francis, a volunteer with the Angel Tree program, said, “I start by picking up my angels for myself and my husband. We buy for a couple, 2 or 3 children every year. Then we come in here we help sort all of the toys that are brought in by groups.”

Patrick Rookey, the warehouse supervisor for the Angel Tree program, said, “if you have an angel, timeliness is very important to us. The bags that I have behind me each represent angels that have not arrived yet here and we really have a 4-step process before an angel bag is ready.”

The Salvation Army said they are at a crisis, urging the community to step in.

“We need gifts. If you don’t have an angel out right now we need all types of gifts for all age groups from 0 to 2 to 10 to 12-year-olds. Anything you would like to give,” said Rookey.

Salvation Army Major Charlotte Gargis said this year they had a 20% increase in families that have never applied for this program before, and 15% of their angels that go out don’t get returned. That is where you can step in.

“People just buying random gifts, new gifts, a case of footballs or in case of barbie dolls, you know people can buy in bulk and bring it in, and we will make sure it gets to a child that needs a Christmas gift,” said Gargis.

Volunteers say helping is even more rewarding for them.

“There’s lots of hugs, there’s lots of smiles, even some tears of joy as the moms or dads or grandparents get to see what their children get, and their wishes can come true,” said Gargis.

Rookey said, “it’s imagining what Christmas morning would look like opening all of the gifts they get.”

Time is running out. Parents will begin picking up gifts on the 21st.
