A driver is arrested for going over 120 mph is Saturday during a street race. The Cape Coral Police Department says the teenager was speeding dangerously on Pine Island Road and Burnt Store Road, a busy area known for speeding.

Cape PD says they know they have a problem on their hands. So it is working on doubling or even tripling the number of traffic units it stations across the city. Their mission is to get reckless drivers and speeders off the road.

Phil Mullen is the Public Information Officer for the Cape Coral Police Department. He says that not one but two cars were racing down Burnt Store Road, a teenager behind the wheel of a Mercedes and the unknown driver of a second sedan.

“It was a racing incident obviously very, very dangerous. I believe the patrol officer clocked this person going about 120mph in 50-55 mph zone, more than twice the limit,” said Mullen.

In this police report, the office said when he turned on his lights and siren and got behind the Mercedes, the driver kept going until they got to the intersection of SW Pine Island Rd, then stopped.

“You will see the inside of the courtroom if you decide to do this if you don’t crash and take your life or somebody else’s,” Mullen said.

Jim Ryba lives in Cape Coral, and he says speeding is an issue during the day and night., especially with how fast the city is growing.

“The intersection is definitely a hazard with the amount of traffic and lack of traffic control in place. People are always trying to scoot across and get into the road, and that’s causing accidents,” said Ryba.

The teenage driver of that Mercedes Benz could face a whole host of charges. Police are still searching for the second racer.
