McCollum Hall in Fort Myers has been recognized for its historical importance by the National Parks Service.

The building that stands empty on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The designation means that the building has been deemed worthy of preservation.

The National Register of Historic Places was first authorized by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. The program supports public and private efforts to identify and protect historic locations.

McCollum Hall in Fort Myers was a popular spot from the 1930s through the 1950s. It was a centerpiece of commerce, music and entertainment that attracted some big-name performers like Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Louis Armstrong, and B.B. King.

The Fort Myers Community Redevelopment Agency is discussing plans to restore the famous building to some of its former glory.
