A Southwest Florida artist has learned his 54-year-old song is featured in an episode of the Netflix original series The Umbrella Academy.

Jerry Dycke spoke to WINK News about how he found out the show was using his song. Dycke said no one from Netflix or his licensing company called to tell him and isn’t sure how his song ended up in the episode.

Instead, Dycke suddenly saw thousands of people start to stream his song ‘Come In, Mr. Lonely.”

“I started seeing comments about my song. And I couldn’t… I had never heard of The Umbrella Academy, never watched it, no idea what it was. And then I started seeing all these comments and they went checked it out,” Dycke said.

Dycke said he never heard of the program. He’s still not sure how the song ended up in the series, but he’s sure glad it did.

“It wasn’t something that I sang all those years. And it wasn’t one of my favorites. I’ve written a lot of songs and that wasn’t one of my favorite ones. But it is now,” Dycke said.

The ballad had only received around 600 views on YouTube since Dycke posted it 12 years ago.

Now there’s been more than half a million streams, collectively, on Youtube and Spotify.

“I was surprised because like I said it’s like 1968 was when it was written and recorded but better late than never they say right,” Dycke said.

Dycke is not sure if he will get any royalties yet, but he is happy to know people are enjoying his song.
