The trucks are rolling, and the sand is coming to Collier County beaches by the ton. Trucks began hauling sand on Thursday to build an emergency berm on Collier County beaches.

The project in Collier County is needed to replace the dunes destroyed by Hurricane Ian in September. The dunes are the first line of defense against the relentless storm surge for upland buildings.

The trucks didn’t make too much of a racket on Thursday. However, it was only the first full day of work hauling in sand.

400,000 tons of sand will be trucked in over the next two months, starting with Naples Beach.

The drivers will work 12-hour shifts from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

WINK News spoke with beachgoers about their thoughts on the truck traffic for the beach berm project.

“It’s good, it’s supposed to protect the shoreline. The trucks just go in and out straight so, not too bad,” one beachgoer said.

The goal is to get the emergency work done before hurricane season begins in June.
