During a press conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis spoke about wine regulation and lifting the quantifiable purchasing limit.

Department of Business and Professional Regulation Secretary Melanie Griffin joined DeSantis during the press conference Thursday morning at the Wine Watch at 837 NE 3rd Ave.

During the press conference, DeSantis spoke about the recent settlement between Disney World and the State of Florida, mentioning parental rights and what should be taught to children in public schools.

DeSantis then got back to wine and mentioned that a new bill would remove the limitation on the capacity of wine sold in retail stores.

House Bill 583 will revise the exception to the maximum allowable capacity for individual containers of wine sold in this state.

The new limit for purchasable wine in retail stores will be upwards of 15 liters.

Under the new law, wine will be allowed for purchase in many commonly used sizes, including:

  • Methuselah (6 liters)
  • Salmanazar (9 liters)
  • Balthazar (12 liters)
  • Nebuchadnezzar (15 liters)

He then shifted the panel to the legislature’s author, state representative Chip LaMarca.

LaMarca then explained what the bill had to go through to reach the governor’s desk, remarking on the importance of wine culture for Italian Americans.

The panel then shifted to Griffin, who emphasized how vital House Bill 583 is when competing with other states.

DeSantis finished the press conference by signing the legislation and toasting the bill with a glass of wine.
