Lee County commissioners met and approved the expansion of the Fort Myers Beach Pier, adding an additional year to its reconstruction.

During the commission meeting Tuesday morning, officials decided to proceed with the $11 million expansion, which will double the pier’s length and widen it to 12 feet.

The decision comes with criticism from the public, as repairs could have been made without expanding the pier.

The other option was to widen the pier by 12 feet for $1 million.

Beach Pier Committee Chairperson Allen Shanofsky told WINK News that crews hope to have shovels in the sand for the new pier by the third anniversary of Hurricane Ian, in September of 2025.
