Republican Florida Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott requested that President Joe Biden grant a pre-landfall emergency declaration due to Tropical Storm Debby.

The storm, which The Weather Authority forecasted to become a hurricane before landfall, is on track to come ashore in the Big Bend area of the state.

The request covered 61 of the state’s 67 counties due to “heavy rainfall and flooding, gusty winds and life-threatening inundation from storm surge along portions of Florida’s west coast.”

All six Southwest Florida counties are part of the 61 mentioned by the Senators.

The request was made in support of Governor Ron DeSantis, who signed an order in recent days declaring a state of emergency ahead of the storm.
