MIAMI (AP) – The Miami Lakes mayor acquitted by a jury of federal corruption charges is demanding his job back, as well as back pay and legal fees.

Michael Pizzi’s attorney Ben Kuehne sent letters Tuesday to city officials saying that Pizzi must be restored to serve out his term until 2016. The city, however, is saying Pizzi will not be reinstated.

On orders of the Florida Supreme Court, Gov. Rick Scott on Monday lifted the suspension from office imposed on Pizzi after his August 2013 arrest. Pizzi was cleared last August of seven corruption-related charges stemming from an undercover FBI investigation into questionable city grants.

A replacement mayor, Wayne Slaton, was elected following Pizzi’s arrest, and the city considers him the rightful mayor.

Pizzi is likely to take the dispute to court.
