Five injured in Fort Myers Beach rollover crash

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla.- Five people are in the hospital after a crash involving multiple cars.

It happened around noon Wednesday on Estero Boulevard, right near the Lani Kai resort.

Deputies say the car was speeding down the road going about 60 to 65 mph. Witnesses tell Wink News the driver was an elderly woman possibly in her 70’s. They say she was driving and her husband was in the passenger seat.

Surveillance video shows the car hit a box truck that was pulling out of the Lani Kai’s parking lot. The vehicle then struck two other cars before flipping and coming to a stop just inches away from the Yo! Taco restaurant.

Witnesses tell WINK News the crash sounded like an explosion and they rushed to pull people out of the cars.

“I’m still trying to calm down from it all, it was so scary. I was in the shop making tacos, I see this car coming right at me and I book it out of the taco as fast as I can,” said employee Kirsten Garcia.

“I actually ducked because I thought it was a big gun shot, but no, we ran out people were stuck in a car, flipped on its side,” said C.C. who works at Lehne Burger.

Friends of the man driving the box truck say the impact broke some of his ribs.

Lee County officials say they aren’t sure why the car was traveling at such a high rate of speed. They say the accident caused about $100,000 in damage.
