FORT MYERS, Fla.- Police have arrested a man for allegedly impersonating a police officer.

Authorities say a parking garage employee reported a suspicious man, later identified as 37-year-old Charles Bramlett, in the downtown parking garage located on Bay Street. The witness said he saw Bramlett pulling on car door handles.

When the parking employee approached Bramlett to investigate, the suspect flashed a gold colored badge that was hanging around his neck and claimed to be a cop. Bramlett then fled the scene on a bicycle.

Officers later located Bramlett at the intersection of Jackson Street and Second Street.

According to officials, Bramlett was carrying a security enforcement officer shield with neck badge holder, handcuffs and a key, a baton, flashlight and gloves.

Police say Bramlett later confessed to the crimes.

Detectives are following up with the victim of a vehicle burglary that occurred in the parking lot and additional charges are pending.

“Impersonating a law enforcement officer is a serious offense and carries an enhanced penalty if done so during the commission of felony as in this case,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Victor Medico.
