ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – A federal judge has ruled that a St. Petersburg hospital discriminated against black employees by keeping them from treating a patient because of their race.

The Tampa Bay Times reports Judge Mary S. Scriven issued the ruling Monday after reviewing evidence in which hospital officials admitted to barring black caregivers from an older Hispanic female patient.

The lawsuit was initiated by Palms of Pasadena nurse Syrenthia Dysart.

Court documents said the woman was mugged by an African-American man and became nervous when she saw black employees.

Lawyer Ryan Barack said a trial is scheduled for April 6 in Tampa to determine whether Dysart should receive damages from the hospital.

Hospital officials said in a statement saying they regard laws, regulations and policies relating to diversity as a minimum standard.
