BEIJING (AP) – China is now the world’s third-biggest weapons exporter.

According to a new study, China has overtaken Germany to move into third place on that list. But China’s five percent share is still small, compared to the 58 percent of exports that come from the U.S. and Russia.

The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute says China’s share of the global arms market rose by 143 percent over the past five years.

The report shows the growing strength of China’s domestic arms industry, which produces fourth-generation fighter jets, navy frigates and a wide range of relatively cheap, simple and reliable smaller weapons.

A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman says China is taking a “cautious approach” to arms exports, and that it abides by U.N. resolutions and domestic laws.
