Operation to remove sunken barge near Naples beach underway

Published: Updated:

NAPLES, Fla.- There’s a spectacle at Gulf Shore Beach in Naples. A giant crane is set to help lift a sunken barge from the water.

The barge began taking on water two weeks ago. Now, efforts to remove it are underway.

The crew from Kelly Bros. Marine are working on the project. The barge is about 38 by 65 feet and belongs to a local company that builds and repairs docks in the area. Two people were on a boat towing the barge when it sank in March, but they are fine.

Standup Paddleboarders have been getting close to the salvage operation to check it out.  Steve Moreland paddled out to the barge and said divers connected cables to it.

“You could see the workmen out there kind of directing and pointing and they’re pulling
the cables and then they’re loosening them up and pulling them over here,” said Moreland.
